How To Use Cool Icons in Excel & PowerPoint

Free VBA Addin

Most Excel users aren't even aware that thousands of icons are bundled with Microsoft Office. These icons are called ImageMso and are readily available for use in ribbon customizations using the .ImageMso attribute. Our free VBA add-in allows you to import Office built-in icons in worksheets to spice-up your dashboards or any shape that can be used as a button to launch macros.

You can browse icons using the galleries in alphabetical order or find cool icons with keyword search. Hover over an icon to display a screentip with the imageMso name. Click on an icon to insert it in the active worksheet. It is that easy! Over 7,000 flat, modern icons are available in Office 2013 or later.

The addin is designed for Excel 2016, so some icons shown may not be available in earlier Office versions.

Enhanced .NET (XLL) Add-in

Our VBA add-in calls Win32 GDI functions during icon conversions. Unfortunately, these legacy functions are not alpha channel aware, as GDI was created long before alpha channels became popular. Exported icons don’t look identical as icons in the ribbon, because transparent areas show as white and shadow elements look black.

To address the above problem that affects some of the icons, we created an additional .NET add-in (XLL). Here is a feature summary:

All Icons (99%) are exported from Office with a transparency instead of a white background
Icons can be imported in worksheets in any of the available sizes: 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128
Icons can be exported to disc for use with userforms in Office applications with or without editing. Image formats available: bmp, gif, ico, jpg, png.

The ico image format files contain an imageMso icon in several sizes.

Here is how you can export several icons at a time: Import all required icons in a worksheet and then click the Export icons ribbon button. All ImageMso icons found in the active sheet will be saved in the path of the active workbook using the size and format type selected. You can export the same icons in an another format by simply selecting a different image Type.

Icons can be rescaled to 32 or 64 size

Free Icons: Material Design By Google

Google's material icons are symbols for common actions and items. We have created a ZIP archive with 960 png files in 17 categories, in 32 pixel size, which is ideal for use in custom Office ribbon UIs.
